If cash is on the low side and you’d rather go the free route then Mimbo is one of the top free magazine-style themes I’ve seen out there.

WP-Polaroid Blogger Template

I’m very pleased to announce the release of WP-Polaroid for Blogger! This template is full of cool features and took me a long time to convert from the original WordPress theme (by Adii) so I hope you appreciate it.

This template is very popular with WordPress users and for good reason. It’s stylish, nicely laid out, and very web 2.0. Not only that, it’s also got the following sidebar page elements built in. You just need to configure them (follow the directions below) in order for them to work properly.

Flickr photo slideshow area where you can display your personal or random pictures
Mybloglog recent blog readers section (you’ll need a mybloglog account)
Three 125×125 ad spots to help you make money from your blog
Recent posts list
Recent comments list
Two sidebar link lists
Page navigation links in the header
RSS feeds for your posts and comments
A header spot to display your personal photo

Make sure to read through all the steps below in order for the template to function on your blog properly. I tried to make it as simple for you as possible by using the Page Elements instead of embedded code but if you have any questions, please post them below. I usually get back to everyone within 24 hours so please be patient!

Also, please be aware that in order to correctly setup this template you’ll need to be comfortable with editing the template code as well as some experience with photo editing software (see step #9). I’d hate for you to spend a bunch of time trying to get this template working only to hit a road block towards the end.

WP-Polaroid Blogger Installation

Now I’m going to be honest with you before we begin. When you use this template you’ll most likely have to wipe out all your existing page elements and start from scratch. Not only is this easiest but it also gives you a clean slate. Now this isn’t always the case but I just wanted to warn you upfront. You might even want to setup a new blog within Blogger to test this template out before you really start using it. It’s easy to do — just go to your Blogger dashboard (top right corner link) and “create new blog”. Think of it as a testing area before clobbering your existing blog. Another option is to try and backup your existing page elements which is explained in my “How to Install a Blogger XML Template” article.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you mess up your Blogger site. This template and set of instructions is free but does not come with any sort of warranty. I’m sure you already realize this but I just wanted to cover my butt regardless. (this is the fine print)

The following 10 steps assume you’ve installed the new WP-Polaroid Blogger template and are now ready to configure the page elements. If you had trouble installing the template, try applying it a second time and saving. Blogger is buggy and that’s actually what I had to do when setting up a demo blog for this writeup (Update - you might want to start with step #10 and then come back to step #1 since it involves editing the actual template code before setting up the page elements).

You can also download the original Photoshop .psd from Adii’s site if you’d like to modify the images. He also provides some steps on setting up the template but for WordPress only.

Open your blog site in a new browser window so you can see how it currently looks. I’ve put some placeholder text in some areas (which we’ll replace in the steps below) to give you an idea as to how it’s supposed to look. Now in a separate browser window, head on over to “Template” =>”Page Elements” and we’ll start setting up your new Blogger template.

Step #1 - Configure the Header Page Elements

First we’re going to customize the header and we’ll start with the Header-Text-Box-Left page element which you can see marked with a red square in the image.

Now when you edit the page element you’ll see “Header-Text-Box-Left” as the title which you can change to something like “MORE ABOUT ME…”. Then add whatever text you want in the text box which will end up appearing below the title (like the white text in the image). Ok, save your page element and you’re done with this box. Do the same with the “Header-Text-Box-Right” page element and you’ll be finished with the header text boxes. Save and then refresh your other Blogger browser window to see what it looks like. We’ll take care of the header links and center puppy image later on since it requires editing of the template code. Let’s move on.

Step #2 - Setup Recent Posts and Recent Comments Page Elements

These lists aren’t going to show up when you first installed the template so we’re going to bring them to life now. They are actually both RSS Feed widgets so we’ll need to paste in your feed and comment rss feeds to make them work. Let’s start with the Recent Posts page element so click edit it. Then paste in your RSS feed url which will most likely be in this format http://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default . Make sure to replace “YOURSITE” with your actual blog url.

There’s no need to change the title (unless you want to call it something else) so then hit “Save Changes”. Then save your blogger layout and go over to your other browser window, refresh and see the Recent Posts appear in your blog’s sidebar. Pretty cool huh! Now you’re going to do the exact same thing with the “Recent Comments” page element but you’ll instead use this feed format http://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default . Again, make sure to replace “YOURSITE” with your actual blog url. Save and make sure it’s working properly. If it doesn’t appear on your blog, chances are you don’t have the correct feed url or you might not have any comments yet.

Step #3 - Setup My Sponsors and Link Love Page Elements

These two page elements are basically link lists where you can links to any sites. Did you know that you can actually sell links from your blog? It’s a very popular and growing business on the web since the number and quality of links to ones’ site increases their rankings in Google and Yahoo. If you want to learn more about selling links on your blog, check out Text Link Ads for more information. I use them and they do a 50/50 revenue split which is great since they handle the advertising & transactions.

Anyhow, to setup the link page elements, click on edit of the My Sponsors page element and then enter the names and urls of the sites you wish to link to. Feel free to add a link to my site so other’s know where you got this wonderful template!

Now do the same for the Link Love page element to get additional links added. If having both link page elements is too much, feel free to delete one from your page layout.

Step #4 - Configure the Blog Archive Page Element

This page element should have been working from the moment you installed this template. The only problem is it probably didn’t look right because the page element style needed to be set to “Flat List” so let’s do that now (if your blog archive list is already set to flat, then you can skip this step). Edit the page element and change the default of “Hierarchy” to “Flat List”. You’ll see it change in the preview window so you’ll know it worked.

Click “Save Changes” and then save the page layout. Now view your blog which you have open in a separate browser window to see how it looks now. It should be correct.

Step #5 - Configure the Recent Readers Page Element

Now this is one of the unique and cool features about this template. It’s integrated with MyBlogLog which is a cool tool for showing pictures of visitors to your site. If you don’t already have an account, you need to set one up first before completing this step. Once you’ve setup an account, claimed your blog, then you can create a widget. I’m going to assume you’ve done those steps and are now ready to plug in your widget. You should be on this screen now within mybloglog.com.

We’re going to make this very easy so don’t worry about any of the colors, width, etc and just click the “Preview and Get Code” button. I know this sounds strange but just stick with me here. So the next screen you’ll get a page with the blocks of code you can use. It will look like this:

The only piece of that code that we need is the part I’ve marked in red. This is the mblID code which is the unique id just for your blog. you’re going to copy this entire id code (I covered some of the digits in the screenshot on purpose) which should be 16 numbers, and put it somewhere safe (like open notepad and paste it there for now).

Then take this javascript code above and replace the “PUTYOURCODEHERE” with the 16 digit number you just put somewhere safe. Next, you’re going to edit the “Recent Readers” page element and paste this new code into the text box. It will look like the image below but it won’t wrap (I just did it for illustration purposes).

Click “Save Changes” and go preview it in your blog. This will replace the current set of mybloglog pictures you see on your site with your set of visitors. Now don’t get too excited because there’s a good chance this section will be empty for a while (almost for sure if you just signed up for a mybloglog account) since you haven’t had any visitors yet so don’t worry. Give it a few weeks before you’ll see some pictures appear.

Step #6 - Configure the Flickr Photo Page Element

This is another optional page element and you can go ahead and delete it if you want. The configuration requires you have a Flickr account and some experience picking out pictures to link to. The pictures that are already installed on this Blogger template are basically links directly into Flickr. There are more than one way to get this section working (like using rss instead of hard coded image links) but I’m only going to show you the simple way. First edit the “FlickrRSS” page element and make sure you’re in html edit mode. Then in the text box you’ll want to paste in the new image code you want to use (see below for the proper format). It will look something like this:

So essentially you need to find pictures on Flickr or somewhere on the web that you want to link to. Using Flickr’s small image size makes sure that they will properly fit in this page element area. Make sure you use the code format above (<p> and </p> around each image) and use eight images. If not, it won’t look right on your blog. Again, the code snipet above is the exact code I’m using for the default images on your blog.

Hopefully this step makes sense and you’re able to add the images you want. If not, just remove the page element and move on.

Step #8 - Configure the Three 125×125 Ad Spots

I don’t know about most of you but I like to try and monetize my blogs. It’s a great passive income stream and fun to see how much you can make. Don’t expect a lot to pour in but at least get some ads on your site to make a few bucks. If you haven’t already read my “How to Make Money From Your Blog - Tip #1” article about setting up Google AdSense on your blog, I’d advice you to read it. You can create 125×125 ads within Google and place them in these spots, for example.

Now let’s go edit the page element. You need to have three 125×125 ads ready to pop into this spot otherwise it’s not going to work. The images also need to be hosted somewhere so make sure you’ve got everything ready before moving forward. Here’s an example of what your code will look like:

This is the actual code currently being used in your blog template. It’s placeholder code but important to keep so continue reading to understand why.

It’s very important you keep the formatting of this section intact otherwise they won’t appear properly. I’m mainly speaking about the class='last' tag at the end of the third 125×125 ad. If that isn’t included in your code, it will look funny on your site. This is a hard step so hopefully you got this far.

If you don’t have any ads to use yet, feel free to keep the placeholder ads there. I recommend clicking on the three ads and setting up accounts with them so you can make money with your blog. If you don’t want the ads you can just delete this page element from your page layout.

Step #9 - Change the Puppy Header Image

Yes, you’re probably wondering why there’s a picture of a cute puppy on your blog. The good news is I actually put it there as a placeholder so it’s easier for you swap out and add your own image. The bad news is you’ll need to have some photo editing skills in order to get the image setup correctly. So first let me tell you how to change the image and then second, explain how to add your own instead. The puppy image code is in the .css part which looks like this:

This is where you’ll need to put the link to your new image. If you don’t want an image at all (or at least for the time being) then just delete the url and the default black polaroid picture will appear. The puppy picture is just positioned on top of the default black picture.

So before you can add a new photo, you’ll need to properly size ~~and rotate it~~. So open your picture in any photo editor like MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Paint.net (free download), GIMP (free download), or Picasa. If you don’t have software already installed, you can always use one of the free online photo editing sites instead like Picnik, Phixr, or FotoFlexer. Whichever photo editing software you decide to use, get ready to make the following two changes.

Resize the photo to 240×240\
~~Rotate the photo 4 degrees counter clockwise~~

Update (2/1/08)

Due to popular demand, I’ve made the polaroid header image straight so it’s easy to add your personal photo without having to rotate it. It’s included in the latest version so just download and you’ve got it.

This sets up the photo to the right size to fit back on top of the polaroid background. Next, save the image you just modified (You can save the photo in any of the standard image formats like png, gif, jpeg, etc) and upload it to a place online where you can link to it.

There are free image hosting services like Photobucket, Googlepages, or ImageShack just to name a few. I personally use Photobucket but any of those will do. You’ll need to setup a free account and then you can upload your images. After you’ve uploaded your new image, you need to get the url where the image is now located. If you decided to use Photobucket, your new url will look something like this:

Take that url and replace the puppy.png url I showed you above. Save your template and reload your blog. Your new picture should now be on your home page! If not, then double-check and make sure you correctly uploaded the photo and it works. If you see your photo on your home page but it’s just not aligned properly, then you’ll need to go back to your photo editing program and tweak it some more. Another option is to edit the .css file and search for #polaroids-pic { . There you can the position, height, width, etc for fine tuning. You really shouldn’t need to mess with those settings though.

UPDATE: If you also want to remove the “Polaroid of Me” text across the default polaroid picture you can. You’ll need to edit the template code and replace the existing polaroid image on line 219 with this one. Search for “rotator.png” then replace it with “blank-polaroid.png” and you should be good to go. (Thanks to Lindsay in the comments below for the suggestion!). The latest download version now comes without the text on the polaroid picture.

Step #10 - Change the Navigation Header Links

This probably should have been step #1 but I honestly forgot about them until now. These links are hard coded into the template so you need to edit the actual code to make them work. Just edit the code template and search for the following bits of code:

You should keep the HOME link as is since it just points back to your home page. You’ll also want to change the links on the right side as well:

<li><a href='#'>ADVERTISE</a></li> <li><a href='#'>CONTACT</a></li> <li><a href='#'>SITEMAP</a></li>

Now just change the a href=”#” and tab name to something you want for each of the links. Do it for both sides and that’s it. Pretty easy actually. Just make sure to save it and say yes when it asks you to delete several page elements like HTML1, HTML2, etc. I don’t know why it asks you each time when you save your template. I think it’s a Blogger bug actually.

Well folks, after 2 hours of writing this up and 8+ hours of converting this template to Blogger, I’m officially done! I hope you enjoy the template and the instructions on configuring it. If it wasn’t for Adii (the original designer), this template never would have been available to convert into a Blogger template!

Blogger in general, has lots of bugs so any “bx-” type error messages you may get I won’t be able to help you. Sorry but it’s Blogger’s fault not mine or yours.

Revision History

Update (2/25/08) - A bug has been found and fixed as of today. It’s a small one but it was brought to my attention by Tessa and Rey. The “Next” and “Previous” posts links were missing from the bottom of the template. If you downloaded this template prior to today, you’ll either have to download it again or fix your existing template. The fix is pretty easy and as follows:

Search your template code for the tag <data:adEnd/>. There should actually be two of them. You want the second one. Below that code you want to paste:

 <b:include name='feedLinks'/>

The final block of code should look like this:

You’ll then want to style this new set of links which is also easy to do. Scroll back up to the top of your code and in the .css section you’ll want to add the following code:

#blog-pager-newer-link {float: left;} #blog-pager-older-link {float: right;} #blog-pager {padding:50px 15px 0px; text-align: center; }

This will make your new links aligned neatly instead of being squished to the left. You can style them even further (color, size, etc) but you’ll have to do that on your own.

Update 4/22/08 - Several people requested to have real 125 x 125 ads instead of the blank placeholder ones so this has been done. A new screen shot shows how this looks as well as the live demo. You can swap out the ads or keep them there indefinitely if you don’t have any ads to use.

Update 5/17/08 - Fixed the individual post image right align issue. You can easily fix this yourself if you’re using this template prior to 5/17. Search your template code for “.postmetadata” and then change the padding element of “15px” to “20px”. That will push everything down and align the images correctly. Thanks to Ricardo for his help on this.

The Morning After Theme

Without a doubt, this is by far the best free WordPress theme I’ve yet to come across. Created by Arun Kale, the theme was developed based on a user survey about the features needed in a magazine like WordPress theme. It’s very powerful and setup like a newspaper or magazine.

This theme requires some work or rather creativity from your part too, to utilize it’s full potential. You need to create your own header image, latest post images etc. Don’t be surprised at how vanilla it looks once you install it. Take some time and read through the author’s release notes to understand how to best setup everything.

Basic Usage

Once the theme is activated, the first thing you need to do is to create two categories called ‘Asides‘ and ‘Featured’. After that’s done, your home page will be displayed correctly.

Also, for the best results, please disable the visual rich text editor from the Users > Your Profile page in your WordPress administration panel.

The theme also requires some plugins (not mandatory) to enable the extended functionalities.

These plugins are all included in the download file but might need to be updated to the latest version. Be sure to check after you install in your plugins area.

This nice and clean WordPress theme is called CSS Gallery and is perfect for website owners who are looking for a way to showcase web templates. If you’re a designer, distributor, or just want a fancy yet simple WordPress theme then you should download and use this template.

Once you download the theme it takes a little bit of configuring to get it working properly. Remember, this isn’t your ordinary theme and you’ll need to take screenshots of your website or blog themes in the correct size dimension before you can get it looking like the demo. It uses custom fields as well so make sure you’ve got a decent understanding about how WordPress uses them.

It comes with built in tagging, Google ads and a sidebar block with 125 x 125 banner ads. The theme is valid XHTML 1.0 transitional and valid CSS.

I honestly have increased my daily adsense earnings just by installing and configuring this theme. It’s very well written and all the adsense blocks are already setup. You just need to go into one includes file and change the adsense publishers id to yours.

The sidebar has a great spot for those popular 125 x 125 ads so you can sell ad space or put in your own affiliate ads. The default comes with six of my favorite affiliate program ads so feel free to change the affiliate ids to yours (or signup if you don’t have accounts for them yet).

There’s also a nice 468 x 60 header banner spot where you can place another adsense block or just a regular ad. I recommend using a regular ad since adsense can only appear three times per page.

Enhancements

I did change a couple items in this template as I felt it was better suited for everyone. The sidebar uses the cool idTabs feature (javascript that changes the tab once you click on it) for three tabs. I removed the “Most Commented” tab and replaced it with the the “Popular Posts” tab instead which uses the Popularity Contest plugin. There were also some spelling errors I corrected which were minor. I also added some onblur javascript so when you click on the “subscribe via email” text it disappears instead of you having to erase the text in the box.

Other Areas

When you first install this theme you might experience a problem with the sidebar tabs (at least I did). The idTabs uses jquery and might conflict with one of your other plugins. For me, it was having trouble with the WP Lightbox plugin so I had to disable it before the idTabs would work properly. You’ll just need to disable any plugins that use jquery until you find the one it conflicts with.

The footer was also updated as well but feel free to move things around however you like. If you’re using widgets then you will appreciate the fact that the footer of this theme (4 columns) is actually widgetized, just drag and drop those widgets into place.

The author also states that it’s important to read the included “readme.txt” file because there’s lots of custom pieces to this theme.

Overall, this is a wonderfully built and designed WordPress theme by Moses. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a free make money online theme that’s ready to go.

The Box Tube WordPress theme was designed for bloggers focused on producing content involving technology, mobile, or gadget blogs. Aesthetically, the theme is extremely appealing as it features CSS-styled images, contrasting colors, and an overall clean look.

You can see from this screenshot that the actual editor is nicely setup so you don’t need to scroll or try and figure out how to click on the “edit” widget links. Most templates that you download make it tough to edit — not this one!

Now before you can get fully up and running with this new Blogger template, you’ll need to properly set things up. Please follow the steps below and read items carefully. The same questions are usually asked over and over by people posting comments, yet the answers are usually right in front of them. This is especially true for why the post date might not be working on your blog.Let’s start from the top of the template and work our way down each item. Don’t be too surprised when the template doesn’t look like the screenshot when you first load it up. You’ve got some configuring to do first!

Top Tabs Setup

This is actually pretty easy since the top tabs are a link list. You don’t need to alter the template code. Just go into your Blogger page layout and click on the “edit” of the “top tabs” widget. Start adding new links and then save. A “home” link will automatically appear once you setup this widget so you won’t need to add one. Save and refresh your blog to see the pretty new tabs you just created. Here’s what it should look like (different names of course)

Configure The Three Header RSS Links

This section is actually setup to dynamically work except for the Feedburner link. You’ll first need to have a FeedBurner account. If you don’t already have one, please read the “How to Setup FeedBurner on Blogger” article and then come back.

Once you’ve got your FeedBurner account, you’ll need to edit this template code and replace a few parts. Search your template code for the following text: <strong>YOUR-FEED-NAME-HERE</strong> . Replace the text with your FeedBurner name (i.e. eBlogTemplates is ours)

After you’ve changed this link save your template and check to see if it works. If you’re having trouble finding your feed name or id, please read our article above or see FeedBurner’s help section to locate it.

Header AdSense Setup

This is a great location for showing ads and we really like how the designer laid everything out. The default ads are just a placeholder but of course feel free to use them until you find a replacement. You’ll need to again edit the template code to swap out the ads. Search your template for <div class=”Syndicate”> and right below that is where you’ll find the ad code block.

Remember, when you paste in your own ads you will need to convert the ad code into a workable Blogger format otherwise you’ll get an error when trying to save it. Use our free AdSense Code Converter to change it automatically for you. You can also look at the existing ad code included in the template and use it as a model.

Individual Post Date Setup

This is a very important step and one that most people think is broken when they install the template. It’s not folks. You just need to go into your Blogger settings and make a small change before it will work.

After you install the Blogging Pro template, go to your Blogger’s “Settings” => “Formatting” and look for “Timestamp Format”. Make sure you change it to this format: “Tuesday, January 25,2008? as shown below.

This needs to be set in this format otherwise the date won’t show up properly on each of your posts! Actually the date will most likely be blank and you’ll think the template is broken. Remember to change the TIMESTAMP FORMAT (fourth item down on the page) and NOT the Date Header Format option.

Amazon Deal of the Day Widget

This is actually a really cool widget put into the sidebar by default. If you have never heard of Amazon’s “Deal of the Day” then you’ve been missing out! Basically each day Amazon has one special item they drastically reduce in price.

Before you’d have to visit their site to see the deal but now it gets delivered directly to your Blogger site! If you want to replace or remove this widget you’ll need to edit the code and look for the following text “amazon-widget”. The line of code below that is the actual Amazon widget so just remove or replace it.

Footer Recent Posts and Comments Widgets

I really love this part about the template. In the past, your footer was an overlooked piece of real estate on your blog. With this template, it makes good use of your footer like many of the other pro bloggers out there today.

This one is easy to setup since we’ve already written an entire article dedicated to this. Please see “How to Setup Recent Comments and Posts Widgets” to configure these two widgets. These two widgets will both appear in the footer once you configure them properly. It’s a very good use of space and provides search engine spiders an entry point into your blog content.

Recommended Money Makers Section

This is the other footer element which comes already setup with our recommended money maker links and programs. This idea came from the ProBlogger.net web site and we included it in our template. You are welcome to keep the links intact or feel free to replace them with your own. You will need to edit the template code to swap them out and also have affiliate accounts setup with each vendor. It’s easy if you don’t have any accounts. Just click on each footer link to setup a new account. Search your template code for “Recommended Money Makers” and you’ll see the links below that.

Live Traffic Feed Sidebar Widget

This is a really cool feature within this template and the best part is you don’t need to do anything to setup it up! There are some further options if you click on “options >>” on your actual blog page under the widget but that’s it. This is a sample of what it will look like once you start generating some traffic (or more traffic) to your blog.

SummerFruit Template

This stylish red, white, and black template was originally created by Carl Mason for WordPress and called SummerFruit but has been ported over to a Blogger template. The Blogger template name is called “Red White Web 2.0″ which you’ll notice when you download the .zip.

Regardless of the name, this template is pretty cool. Unlike other sites, you don’t need to paste in any code into the template. The search box and RSS image with feed work right out of the box! Also, the images are hosted on our bullet proof image server with unlimited bandwidth so your blog will never be without it’s skin.

The only piece you need to configure are the tabs across the top which is easy. Just edit the template via Blogger page elements and look for the “Top Tabs” page element. This is just a link widget so add the links you want to appear at the top of your blog. You’ll see what I mean once you tinker with it. Easy as pie! Most templates require you to actually edit the template source code to setup these links. Not us!

There’s also an “Ads” widget pre-installed with this template which you’re free to remove or configure to your liking. It’s an html widget box so once you paste in your own ad code, the default Text Link Ads ad will disappear.

Oh, one other thing to mention. Sometimes you don’t have the date format properly setup for it to work with this Blogger template. If the date doesn’t show up on each post, then you need to go fix your Timestamp Format setting. Go to “Settings” => “Formatting” and look for “Timestamp Format” which you want to be like this:

FTW Template

This blogger template is converted from a WordPress Theme called FTW, created by Flisterz from flisterz.com. It’s got lots of cool features such as a calendar image for each post. The best part is you don’t need to link to other sites with Javascript or change any urls to make it work. We at eBlog Templates have done all the work for you so this feature just works right out of the box!

The search form has been embedded, so the only thing you need to set is just the menu on the top right. You’ll want to edit the code and look for the following section to edit the tabbed menu items:

<ul> <li><a href='/'>Home</a></li> <li><a href='#'>Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href='#'>About Us</a></li> <li><a expr:href='data:blog.homepageUrl + "feeds/posts/default"'>RSS Feed</a></li> </ul>

The only items you want to tinker with are the “Contact Us” and “About Us” list items. You can of course add more but don’t change the “Home” or “RSS Feed” tabs because they are automatically setup.

There’s also a cool “Ads” widget which defaults to our Google AdSense ads. The widget is a html text box so once you plugin your ad code, our default code will disappear. We didn’t want a big empty space to appear on your blog and it’s better to show an example instead of nothing!

All the images are hosted using our Pro Photobucket account (unlimited bandwidth) so your images will work all the time unlike other sites that offer this same template!

Here’s an oldie but goodie template that was requested by several people. It’s the 4th template in the “Andreas” series and it’s a simple 3 column gem. It’s perfect for a blog that doesn’t want to be too flashy yet needs the flexibility to have many widgets in the sidebar.

This template is entirely made up of zero images (well, actually just one for the quotes) so it loads really fast. You also don’t have to worry about your images disappearing since they aren’t hosted anywhere.

Many people do same mistakes on installing a blogger template. This article is created to help you to understand the right way to install it.

Warning, this is a long article, about 2400 words. So you may prepare a cup of coffee first and your time to read this. Or you can also print this article, or bookmark it first, so you can read it later or next time you have trouble on installing a blogger template.

Opening this article could also load pretty long, especially if you don’t have a fast internet connection there. Please Digg or share this with your friends so they can learn also if next time they have same trouble on it.

This guidance is for New version of blogger template. Most problems on installing template are caused by the blogger widgets (Page Elements). So on old blogger version, you don’t have anything to worry.

Why I said it most problems? Does it mean there any any other problem? Yes of course there are other problems caused not only because the widgets. the most known problem which most often occurs also is that it is because many bloggers just copy and paste the code from the XML file into the template editor. that is wrong.
DO NOT just copy and paste the code from the XML file into your template editor on your blogger dashboard!

Just Copy and Paste your XML code is not the same as Uploading the template through the Template Uploader.

This is the main different thing of New Blogger Version and the Old one. On the Old version, blogger doesn’t have widgets on it. So you can just copy and paste the code into the template editor. But Not on the New Version!

On the New Version, Blogger has widgets on it. so you can not just copy and paste the code, you have to upload it.

But why? why can’t I just copy and paste the code? you said it is the widget makes the differences. but why the widgets?

Well, On the new version, Blogger has widgets which they store the widget contents on their Server. If before installing this template you have already been using a new blogger template also, and you have widgets on it, and you store some data’s on it. Then Blogger Engine must has your data’s stored on their Database.

Here if you just copy and paste the code from the XML file into the template editor, the new widgets set on the new template may conflict with the widget set on your previous template which has been stored and saved on the Blogger Database Server.

By Uploading your new template through the Template Uploader, you tell Blogger Engine that you are changing your template. And there, Blogger will makes some adjustment on their Database. But not as you just Copying and Pasting the template code.

I hope you understand about this. Please do not just copy and paste the template code. Always upload it through your template uploader.

So here it is,
Installing a Blogger Template.

1. Go to your Template Editor on your blogger blog control panel.

edit HTML

2. Click on the Browse button, and get your XML template file, and click Upload.

3. Done.

On the normal and most cases, that steps would be enough.

What did you mean by saying “On the normal case” Jack?

Oh I was expecting you to ask that question, great. On the normal case here means If the XML template has 3 widgets in it. e.g Blog1 Widget, Categories Widget, Archives widget and your current template has also 3 widgets with exactly the same types as the XML template, that is normal case.

You’re lucky if you have same widgets on your current template and on the new template you’re going to install.

Unfortunately, not every time we got that perfect condition. sometimes we got a template with so many widgets already installed on it. This is the main cause of this problem.
How we know if a template has more or less widgets then our current template?

There are several ways to know this. but the easiest way is

1. Create a new blog on blogger. just name it as a test blog

2. Upload the new template there. follow the instructions there above.

3. Go to Page Elements, and see how many widgets exist there.

4. Compare with your current template on your blog.

5. Now you know if it is has more or less widgets then your current template.

Actually, I recommend you to always have a new dummy blog, so you can always test a template there first before you’re going to install it on your main blog. I recommend it high!

On the next guidance, we will focus on this matters. I will separate the guidance into 2 lines. The first is Installing a blogger template which has more widgets then our current template, and Installing a blogger template which has less widgets then our current template. they are different things.
Installing a blogger template which has more widgets then our current template.

1. Upload your template. Follow the steps on the first guidance there above.

Usually, if the template has more widgets, it has no problem on the uploading. so you should have no problem until this step.

And here, you have been successful, at the moment your new template is alive. if you refresh your blog, you should see that your new template is already installed.

The problem will occurs if you want to make some changes on your template. Each time you edit something, you will never be able to save your changes because an error occurs saying like this

We were unable to save your template

Please correct the error below, and submit your template again.

More than one widget was found with id: HTML5. Widget IDs should be unique.

What cause this problem? It is because as I said before, the new template has more widgets then our previous template.

It is Blogger Engine’s bug I think. Each time we upload a new template with more widgets then our previous template, let say the template has this widgets

“Blog1, Archive1, Label1, HTML1, HTML2, HTML3, HTML4, HTML5″

and our previous template has only this widgets

“Blog1, Archive1, Label1, HTML1, HTML2″

The Blogger Engine will automatically convert those widgets that we don’t have yet on our previous template. To be example as this below

“Blog1, Archive1, Label1, HTML1, HTML2, HTML1, HTML2, HTML1″

So each time we create some modifies on the template, we will never be able to save it because it has some widgets with same id’s.

So how to fix this problem?

now we go to the next step on installing a blogger template with widgets more then our previous template.

2. After you successfully upload your new template, now without changing anything, Click on the Save Template there next to the template code.

If you don’t see any error occurs, then Congratulation. You don’t need to read the next steps anymore.

But if error occurs. and says “More than one widget was found with id: HTML5. Widget IDs should be unique.“

then here is how you can fix it.

Fixing the Duplicate id’s on blogger template

2.1 If it says HTML5 should be unique, then go find HTML5 (you can use CTRL+F on your keyboard and type HTML5 on the search box).

Now you should see your cursor is now focusing on this lines below

It’s usually on your last lines of your templates. now replace it with this code below,

3. Save your template.

4. Now go to Page Elements Control Panel.

There on the most bottom of your page elements, you should see a new blank section exists.

what you need to do next is, drag and drop all the widgets on the list (remember the going to be deleted list?) to that blank section. All of them.

5. Click on the save button. (on the top right).

6. Then go to your Template Editor again.

Find this line.

Yes, it is the line previously we just added. now the html code has been changed rite?

Now copy all of that HTML code begin form the line above, until the last line. (see the example below)

7. Now open your new template XML file. (you can use Notepad, just right click -> Open With -> Choose Notepad).
